Lantana, Palm Beach County

Commercial painting in Lantana

In Lantana, color is regulated only where history is. On a designated historic site or in a district, a certificate of appropriateness from the plan review committee is needed whether or not a building permit is, and only maintenance that keeps the same color is exempt. Elsewhere we found no color review.

Sec. 6-166 sets that rule, and Sec. 6-168 limits the maintenance exemption to work that does not change design, material, color or outer appearance. Appeals go to the Town Council. The town's property standards also require commercial and industrial buildings to stay free of excessive peeling paint, which brings older plazas back to repainting.

The Downtown Overlay along the town's main corridors describes several styles, including a Caribbean look with multi-colored stucco. A repaint there is drawn to fit the overlay's style rather than a single corporate color.

The county's Palm Beach County Park Airport sits on Lantana Road, and the county calls it a noise-sensitive airport surrounded by homes. Hangar and support-building painting there follows the Department of Airports' rules, with access arranged before a start date.

Questions

Commercial painting in Lantana

Does Lantana review paint colors outside historic sites?

We did not find a color review outside historic sites and districts. On those, a change of color needs a certificate of appropriateness from the plan review committee.

What does it cost to paint a commercial building?

There is no rate sheet. The quote comes from a visit, or from photos and drawings when they show enough, and it turns on the condition of each surface, the repairs found after washing, the coating system, how every wall is reached, who stays inside and which approvals come first. Two Palm Beach County buildings of the same size can need very different work.

Is lead paint a concern on an older building?

It can be. The federal government banned lead paint for homes in 1978, so older coats may still hold it. EPA's RRP rule reaches paid jobs that disturb old paint in housing of that age and in places young children use regularly, a day care in an older plaza for example. Those jobs go to an EPA-certified firm using lead-safe practices, so we ask the building's age and tenants first.

How long will the work take?

We set a sequence after the site visit, not before. It turns on what the walls look like once washed, how much repair they need, rain, how each face is reached, whether a board must vote on colors, and which hours the building lets us work. Once those are known, you get the order of work with each dependency named.
