West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County
Commercial painting in West Palm Beach
West Palm Beach has 17 historic districts and more than 45 individually designated sites, yet its preservation staff state plainly that they do not regulate paint colors. A same-building repaint downtown or in Northwood is usually a scheduling and access job, while other exterior changes there still need a certificate.
The city's FAQ answers the question in one word: "Does Historic Preservation regulate paint colors? No." Staff offer advice on period colors to owners who ask. Work that changes a building's exterior appearance in other ways, such as new openings or materials, still needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, so a repaint that comes with stucco or window changes is checked before it is scheduled.
The downtown code is written around 13 districts with different characters, from the office towers on Flagler Drive to the shops around Clematis Street. The Flagler Drive lots face the Lake Worth Lagoon, so east-facing walls, rails and balconies there take wind off open water every day.
Downtown repaints usually mean tall elevations over busy sidewalks. A swing stage or lift over a public walk needs a protection plan, and a truck or lift in the street needs the city's right-of-way approval. We sort those out with the building manager before a start date is offered.

Questions
Commercial painting in West Palm Beach
Does a new paint color need historic approval in West Palm Beach?
The city's preservation office says it does not regulate paint colors, though staff will suggest period colors on request. Other exterior changes that come with the repaint can still need a Certificate of Appropriateness.
What does it cost to paint a commercial building?
There is no rate sheet. The quote comes from a visit, or from photos and drawings when they show enough, and it turns on the condition of each surface, the repairs found after washing, the coating system, how every wall is reached, who stays inside and which approvals come first. Two Palm Beach County buildings of the same size can need very different work.
Is lead paint a concern on an older building?
It can be. The federal government banned lead paint for homes in 1978, so older coats may still hold it. EPA's RRP rule reaches paid jobs that disturb old paint in housing of that age and in places young children use regularly, a day care in an older plaza for example. Those jobs go to an EPA-certified firm using lead-safe practices, so we ask the building's age and tenants first.
How long will the work take?
We set a sequence after the site visit, not before. It turns on what the walls look like once washed, how much repair they need, rain, how each face is reached, whether a board must vote on colors, and which hours the building lets us work. Once those are known, you get the order of work with each dependency named.
